Thats what we are going to do this lesson. No, I am not a shrink! We are going to look at the head of your page. It Might start with a commentary line like:
<!-- \/ starthtml -->
This commentary line does not harm your page, but it takes up some space, so you can leave it or remove it as you want!
Followed by the actual HTML-tag, that tell your computer to interprete the page in this Language.
At the HEAD-tag: <HEAD>, the head of your page starts.
Some providers will give you a story in commentary lines what the META-tags are about. For instance:
"The block of META tags is required by Homepage Studio to identify this file as created by Freeform Editor. Please do not remove them, but feel free to append them with your personal data below. Meta tags help search engines identify the content of your page."
That sort of says it all. By the way, META tags will not show up directly on your page.
I feel a bit obnoxious today so I am going to examine the META tags starting just above the </HEAD>, (head-end-tag), and work my way up from there. Mind you, not all providers will give 100% the same Meta tags (if they give them at all), But these probably will be there:
- Title
- You will find the title between the TITLE-tags.(Not a real META-tag). This page title will not show up on your page, but it will be visible on the utter top line of your screen. Name your page! This is what it might look like:
<TITLE>A Bit About Me</TITLE>
- Author
- It looks like this:
<meta name="author" content="enter your name here"> You just fill in your name where it says to, and Voilá, You're it!!!!
- Description
- It looks like this:
<meta name="description" content="enter a description here">
Here you describe in short what your page is all about. So if a search engine hits your page, a visitor may read your page content and might actually decide to pay you a visit
- Description
- It looks like this:
<meta name="keywords" content="
enter keywords here">
Now this is important. If someone is looking for a recipe for tomato soup. He/she goes to a search engine, (like alta vista, Netscape search, or Lycos) and types in the word "tomato soup". The Search engine looks through all the meta's of all the pages it knows and looks for the KEY WORD "tomato soup". So, if you like to attract some more visitors to your page than just your family and friends, try to find as many keywords possible that are relevant to the content of your page. Of course you also must make your page kmown to those search engines. Your provider will usually offer you the possibility for that!
- "Content-Type"&"generator"
- These meta tags tell a bit about what program built the page, and about the language used. They must be there. Leave them the way they are!!!
- !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC
- You sometimes might find this one on your meta list. Like above, dont touch. It tells the computer what type of document this is. Not really a META tag. Leave it where it is
That was about all there is to say about the META Tags for now. In the advanced course we might add a few things to the head of your page. I hope you make it a habit to put a good HEAD on the body of your page. Now, go to your page and adept yours!!!!
Remember the message board? You can ask your questions there, teel something about your self, or show of your first page!!
